Our History:

In 1891, a band of Christians in the Marshville area of Harrington, Maine came together to build a meetinghouse for worship. Frank Lovett and others gave sacrificially to construct a worship center for their community. On June 13, 1894, this band officially organized as the Advent Christian Society of Harrington with Jason C. Cole, Willard R. Wass, James W. Lindsay, William E. Pinkham, Mrs. R. E. Lindsay, Mrs. M. E. Pinkham, and Mrs. H. F. Wass as founding members. Affiliated with the Advent Christian Church, they were identified with the teachings of William Miller who eagerly expected the Second Coming of King Jesus and proclaimed the message of the Second Advent in the late 19th century. Miller saw an outpouring of revival and salvation that accompanied the preaching of God’s coming Kingdom.
Our church has a rich heritage in differing Christian traditions, as our story is a story of the body of Christ uniting for the proclamation of the gospel. Our pulpit has been filled with Advent Christians, Wesleyans, Baptists, Congregationalists, and Pentecostals. Together, their voices have proclaimed the gospel and filled our meetinghouse for over 125 years.
In the 1980s, the annex was added on to the worship center, providing a fellowship hall and Sunday School classroom. God’s faithfulness to this body cannot be overestimated. Alongside the pastors who came, faithful elders and leaders guided this family to where she is today. Notable among them are Beryl and Sidney Mitchell and Phil and Shalba Farren. Their faithfulness and leadership, alongside many others, have kept the light of the gospel burning brightly for over a century.
In 1999, Rev. Clive and Anna Meidahl came to lead this body of believers. Under their leadership, DownEast Christian Church became an independent Christian church in 2005 before joining with the Assemblies of God USA in 2007.
Today, DownEast Christian Church continues as a Biblical, Full Gospel, and Missional community desiring to proclaim the light of God’s Word in DownEast Maine. We proclaim the Gospel in the Fullness of the Holy Spirit, awaiting the coming Kingdom of God. We join Jesus in His prayer: “Thy Kingdom Come, Thy Will Be Done on Earth as it is in Heaven.”
